President Donald Trump gives Iran a two-month deadline to reach a nuclear deal

US: According to an Axios story, President Donald Trump has given Iran two months to come to a new nuclear deal. Earlier this month, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei received a letter promising fresh negotiations and warning of dire repercussions if Tehran persisted in its nuclear program. Prolonged discussions were clearly out of the question, according to the message, which was characterized as unyielding.

Since Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018, the United States and Iran have continued to disagree on nuclear policy. The goal of his administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign has been to stop Iran’s nuclear aspirations and isolate it economically. As long as the “maximum pressure” strategy is in effect, Tehran’s stated stance so far has been that it is reluctant to interact with the Trump administration.

Anwar Gargash, the minister of state for international affairs of the United Arab Emirates, handed Trump’s letter to Iran. It established a strict deadline along with the proposal for talks on a new nuclear agreement. Iran had a limited window to participate, as the letter made plain by expressly ruling out open-ended negotiations. It is still unclear, however, whether the two-month limit started when the delivery was made or when the discussions started.

According to a U.S. official and another unidentified source, the White House notified important U.S. allies, such as Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, of the substance of Trump’s letter before its dispatch. The administration made an effort to inform its regional allies about the circumstances of the possible diplomatic transition. Despite the threat of military action, the action showed that Washington desired backing for its strategy.

Trump acknowledged the existence of the letter in March and said that Iran has two options: engage in negotiations or take military action. He reaffirmed that the United States will respond forcefully if required and that Tehran must not be let to build nuclear weapons. Iran has always maintained that the sole goals of its nuclear program are peaceful ones.

According to a representative for the Iranian foreign ministry, Iran would respond to Trump’s letter “after full scrutiny.”

President Donald Trump of the United States: “Iran may be dealt with militarily or via a deal. Since I don’t want to harm Iran, I would rather strike a deal. They are a wonderful group of folks.

Iran’s spokeswoman for the foreign ministry: “At this time, there is no need for us to make (Trump’s) letter public. After careful consideration, we will respond to this letter via the proper means.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, declared, “We will threaten them back if they threaten us. We will take action if they follow through on their threats. We will definitely retaliate in kind if they jeopardize our country’s security.”

Although he has offered a diplomatic route, Trump has persisted in his “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran. It’s unclear whether Tehran will participate under the given circumstances.
