Kamala Harris talks about replacing Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket and criticizes Donald Trump

US ELECTION: During a Univision-hosted town hall, Vice President Kamala Harris discussed taking President Joe Biden’s place atop the Democratic ticket for 2024 and attacked her Republican opponent, Donald Trump. On Thursday, Harris answered questions on immigration and health care from a group of undecided voters in Las Vegas on the Spanish-language network.

The town hall was held in the midst of Harris’s several recent media appearances, which included a cordial sit-down on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and a questioning on CBS’s 60 Minutes.

Harris has the opportunity to win over Latino voters at the Univision event, particularly those who reside in battleground states like Nevada and Arizona. In 2020, this group proved crucial for the Democrats, but according to latest surveys, Trump is leading Harris in the Hispanic and Latino vote.

Spoke about Biden’s ‘Unprecedented’ Decision to Resign

Undecided voters urged Harris to explain the nomination process, expressing worry about the way Biden seemed to have been “pushed aside” from the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential candidacy.

“President Biden made a decision that I think history will show was probably one of the most courageous that a president could make, which is he decided to put country above his personal interest,” said Harris.

“And he made that decision [and] within that same period of time supported my candidacy and urged me to run,” she added. “I believe that the stakes right now are extraordinarily high and potentially—some might say, historians have said—unprecedented.”

Republicans Charged of Playing ‘Political Games’ Regarding Hurricane Relief

Following Hurricane Helene, which recently impacted the Southeast, and during the planning for Hurricane Milton, the severe storm that slammed landfall in Florida on Wednesday, Harris denounced the “misinformation” that was disseminated.

After a question regarding the federal government’s response to the disasters, the vice president spoke. In the past, Trump erroneously claimed that since funds were being used for immigration, the Federal Emergency Management Agency was unable to respond to Hurricane Helene. The Biden government, he said, was not providing aid to “Republican areas.”

“I have to stress that this is not a time for people to play politics,” Harris said.

“When I worked toward my goal of keeping people safe, as a prosecutor, I never asked a witness or a victim of crime, ‘Are you a Republican?'” she went on. What party do you support? I never asked anything other than, “Are you okay?”Regretfully, we have seen instances in the last two weeks after Hurricane Helene and the early aftermath of Milton when individuals are engaging in political posturing, implying that aid and resources are being allocated to certain individuals depending on their political beliefs. Furthermore, this is just untrue.”

Described Position on Abortion

In response to a question from the audience about potential restrictions on access to reproductive health care, Harris said that Ella Emhoff, her stepdaughter, “going to have fewer rights than my mother-in-law in this year of our Lord 2024.”

“When we talk about what makes for what is right and what is wrong, I think we agree that there are certain decisions, especially over heart and home, that the government should just not be making for us,” Harris said.

“There are probably many people here and watching who rightly have made a decision that they do not believe in abortion,” she said. “My argument is not that they should reconsider what’s best for their family or themselves. It basically says that this is not a judgment that the government should be making.”

Comforted Audience Member

Ivett Castillo, one of the audience members, sobbed as she told Harris about her mother’s recent passing. Although she was born in Mexico, Castillo said that her mother spent the most of her life in the United States and was never able to get legal status or provide the “type of care or service that she needed or deserved.”

Castillo said, “My question for you is, what are your plans, or do you have plans, to support that subgroup of immigrants who have been here their whole lives, or most of them, and have to live and die in the shadows?”

Harris chose to attack the “broken immigration system” and the Republicans for blocking a bipartisan border security plan earlier this year rather than directly responding to the issue.

Additionally, the vice president tried to console Castillo, who had lost her own mother, Indian-born Shyamala Gopalan, who had emigrated to the United States.

Harris said, “You have to remember your mother as she lived.” “I have enough of a feeling about your strength that it probably comes from her to know she would want you to remember her as she lived and not as she died.”

“I’m so sorry for what you’ve gone through,” she said. Furthermore, my mother arrived in the US at the age of 19. She arrived alone, by herself, and was by herself. Maya, she reared my sister and me, and I am aware of what it’s like to have a loving, hardworking mother and then lose her. However, I am aware that her soul lives on.”

Harris approached Castillo one again for consolation after the town hall concluded.

Did Not Mention Three Positive Aspects of Trump

Teresa Djedjro, an audience member, requested the vice president to list three attributes that Trump had in her last question of the town hall. Harris could hardly think of three that she thought the former president had.

“I think it’s very important that Donald Trump loves his family,” the woman said. One of the most significant things we can prioritize, in my opinion, is our family.

To be honest with you, however, I don’t really know him. He and I only crossed paths once, during the debating stage. I don’t really have much else to give you since I haven’t met him before.”

On October 16, Trump will participate in a town hall hosted by Univision.
