Donald Trump will urge a plan to increase pay for border agents at a rally in Arizona on Sunday
During a Sunday event in Arizona, former President Donald Trump said that if elected, he will push Congress to double the pay of Customs and Border Protection personnel and recruit thousands more. The proposed strategy calls for the employment of 10,000 new agents, a 10% pay increase for current agents, and $10,000 in signing and retention incentives.
Three weeks before Election Day, immigration policy and border security are the two most important topics in the swing state. According to polls, people have more faith in Trump than in Vice President Kamala Harris when it comes to immigration.
During the campaign event at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, the former president said, “This will ensure that we can hire and keep the Border Patrol agents that we need to keep.” Additionally, we are able to bring in a large number of fresh, excellent ones.”
At a campaign event in Arizona, a crucial battleground state, Trump was joined on stage by Border Patrol union members, who then revealed the proposal.
“On behalf of the 16,000 men and women represented by the National Border Patrol Council, we strongly support and endorse Donald J. Trump for President of the United States,” said Paul Perez, the president of the union.
The union supported a bipartisan border security plan earlier this year, which the outgoing president refused to sign.
Trump put pressure on Republican legislators to veto the “horrendous” package. In order to clear the backlog, the measure would have provided funding for the hire of 1,600 more asylum officials and 1,500 more Customs and Border Protection agents.
In response to Trump’s remarks, Senate Republicans decided to stall the measure, enabling him to maintain immigration and border policy as the focal points of his campaign for reelection.
Democrats have chastised the former president for revealing his policy proposals to safeguard the border between the United States and Mexico. Harris has promised to bring back the border measure that Trump rejected.
A spokesman for the Harris campaign, Matt Corridoni, said in a statement: “Trump assured Americans Mexico would foot the bill for his failing border wall. It was untrue. And then he forced the cost of his failing border wall onto taxpayers.
“Trump wants to run on one issue; he doesn’t care about finding a solution. For this reason, even though the bipartisan border measure had the support of the Border Patrol, Obama destroyed it. It would have secured the border.
“There’s only one candidate focused on tackling issues for the American people, has taken on transnational gangs, and is focused on keeping our communities safeāVice President Kamala Harris.”
