After Elon Musk’s X account was flagged, Bill Burr launched a vicious attack on him

After making fun of Elon Musk, the owner of X, for what some said to be a Nazi salute at a Donald Trump pre-inauguration event on January 20, comedian Bill Burr has said his account on X, previously Twitter, was “flagged for inappropriate” material.

Musk has vehemently disputed that the motion he performed on the stage at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., was a fascist salute. The Anti-Defamation League, which fights antisemitism, supported this view.

Shortly after taking office on January 20, Trump named tech entrepreneur Elon Musk to head the newly established Department of Government Efficiency. The DOGE has been in charge of a vigorous government job-cutting effort.

Musk, who has become one of Trump’s closest and most powerful political friends over the last year, was present for the president’s first cabinet meeting after his second inauguration on Wednesday.

During his Monday Morning Podcast on February 24, Burr took aim at Musk, claiming that he got an email stating that his X account was “flagged for inappropriate” after he “made fun of the f****** Twitter guy for f****** Sieg Heiling [doing a gesture associated with Nazi Germany] not once but twice.”

“I don’t even tweet anymore,” Burr said. This baby is a f******. Hitler-like, a f****** baby. The comic continues to sometimes post on X; February 18, when he shared a message about a forthcoming Broadway job.

Burr did not specify which particular remarks he thought had angered the tech mogul over Musk’s gesture or if his X account had been subjected to any particular limitations as a result.

According to the official X support center, users may be banned from the site for a variety of reasons, such as advocating violent activities, revealing personal information like addresses without permission, or impersonating someone else. X stated: “Our rules are to ensure all people can participate in the public conversation freely and safely.”

Musk gave a speech at a Trump rally on January 20, just before the inauguration of the next president. Musk thanked Trump supporters for their efforts during his speech, then positioned his right hand over his heart before extending it horizontally with the palm facing out and repeating the move in the opposite way. Afterward, he remarked, “My heart goes out to you.”

Musk vehemently denied on X that he had done a Nazi salute, despite criticism to the contrary. “To be honest, they need better dirty tricks,” he remarked. I’m so sick of the ‘everyone is Hitler’ assault.

In a recent episode of his Monday Morning Podcast, Burr said that billionaires should be “put down like rabid dogs”—a statement that reflects his recent politics.

Burr used the phrase “free Luigi” in reference to Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old who is suspected of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in January. Mangione entered a not guilty plea to the accusation.

On his podcast, Burr discussed Musk, saying, “I’ll tell you what was amusing. I ridiculed the ****** I never check my emails, and the Twitter man has f****** heiling twice. It said that my Twitter account had been marked for improper behavior while I was going through my emails. I no longer even tweet. What a f ******, sweetheart. Like a f****** baby, Hitler.

“I’m annoyed because the Twitter user is from South Africa and not even from here. He wants to establish a f****** tyranny in this nation. He doesn’t think we’re worthy of democracy.

Democratic Congressman Dan Goldman issued the following statement to Newsweek following Musk’s January 20 gesture: “Elon Musk has supported the Nazi-sympathizing German Political Party AfD, encouraged the racist and antisemitic ‘Great Replacement’ conspiracy theory, and permitted anti-Jewish hate to spread unchecked on his website, X.

“Viewed in that context, and regardless of any justification, his salute last night at Donald Trump’s inauguration rally can only be interpreted as a Sieg Heil salute that is synonymous with Nazi support for Hitler.”

“It appears that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge,” the Anti-Defamation League stated in part in response to criticism of Musk’s move on X on January 20. Everyone involved should take a minute to breathe and provide each other some grace, if not the benefit of the doubt.

Musk and X have not addressed Burr’s assertion that his social media account was flagged as problematic.

Musk is still one of the most powerful people in Trump’s government because of his work with DOGE, but it’s unclear whether this will help or hurt his chances of winning the election.
