A gunman entered the lobby of a huge office tower in Midtown Manhattan and opened fire

New York: A shooter invaded the lobby of the vast 345 Park Avenue office complex in Midtown Manhattan Monday evening, killing four individuals, including 36-year-old New York Police Department officer Didarul Islam.

Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant who has been hailed as a hero by New York authorities, leaves behind his wife, who is expecting their third child, and two small kids.

Islam was off-duty but in uniform and working security at the building when he was shot and murdered by 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch.

Tisch said at a press conference on Monday night that “he was doing the job that we asked him to do.”

Wearing a uniform that symbolized the pledge he made to our community, he placed himself in danger and made the ultimate sacrifice—being shot in cold blood. He was a hero who died as he lived.

At the press conference, Mayor Eric Adams said that Didarul had been with the NYPD’s 47th precinct in the Bronx for three and a half years.

According to Adams, he was the sole son of his father. “He was a hero, and we admire him for putting his life on the line,” the mayor told Islam’s family during their meeting earlier Monday night.

“Everyone with whom we spoke said that he was a person of faith, who believed in God and in leading a godly life,” Adams added.

He was rescuing people. He was defending the people of New York. He is the epitome of what this city is. In addition to the outfit he wears, he is a true-blue New Yorker.

Police departments from as far afield as Los Angeles and New York Governor Kathy Hochul have offered sympathy messages for the deceased officer’s family.

The NYPD wrote on X, “Police Officer Didarul Islam embodied the best of our department.” “His life was tragically cut short today while he was defending New Yorkers from danger.” In this moment of unfathomable suffering, we unite in prayer. We shall always pay tribute to his legacy.

Before killing himself in the chest, Tamura reportedly shot five individuals, including Islam, according to the police. According to police, one individual survived and is in critical but stable condition.
