Texas Governor Greg Abbott orders more razor wire to fortify southern border
Governor Greg Abbott of Texas issued an order to bolster the southern border with extra razor wire, while Vice President Kamala Harris said that the Republican Party was “fanning the flames of fear” around immigration.
Abbott said that “Texas will not back down” from stepping up border security and keeping “communities safe” in a post on X, the former Twitter.
His statements coincide with Kamala Harris’s attempts to persuade voters that she is the right person to handle the southern border situation. Redfield and Wilton Strategies’ research indicates that 47% of respondents trust Donald Trump when it comes to immigration, but just 36% trust the vice president.
At a Las Vegas event on Sunday, Harris criticized the language used by Trump and the Republican Party.
Speaking at the World Market Center in downtown Las Vegas, Harris said, “He continues to fan the flames of fear and division.”
The complexity of immigration issues needs to be addressed seriously, she added, and “you know Donald Trump won’t solve it.”
“When he was president, he did nothing to fix our immigration system,” she said.
About two weeks have passed since Trump had a rally there before Harris’s campaign appearance.
Abbott often declares that the army, razor wire, and buoys are being deployed in an attempt to stop illegal immigrants from entering the nation.
The constitutionality of the razor wire has been a source of continuous disagreement between state and federal administrations ever since it was implemented in 2023 to stop illegal immigration.
It follows Harris’s September 27 visit to the border between the United States and Mexico as the Democratic presidential candidate.
“Texas National Guard engineers work alongside Louisiana National Guard soldiers to reinforce razor wire barriers at the border,” Abbott said in a post on X, previously Twitter. Texas will not give up on our goal of ensuring the safety of our citizens with the assistance of our partner states.
According to a new UnidosUS survey, border security and immigration reform are top concerns for Latino voters in Nevada and other crucial states. Voters made it clear that they strongly supported laws that provide unauthorized immigrants a route to citizenship.
Harris has drawn attention to the bipartisan border security plan that Trump directed Republicans to reject, ultimately killing it.
In order to address the backlog of immigration petitions, the measure would have added 4,300 asylum officials and 1,500 more CBP officers. It would also have granted the President the power to deny any asylum claims.
According to Harris, Trump “tanked the bill” because he believed it would damage his candidacy.
Additionally, if Trump is elected to a second term, he has vowed huge deportations. Nonetheless, several Republicans have expressed disapproval of the ideas.
“We must have comprehensive immigration reform, strong border security, and an earned pathway to citizenship,” Harris said.
Harris mentioned immigrants who came to the country as minors and called them “Dreamers,” saying that there are hardworking people who have “been here for years, including our Dreamers.”
An immigrant known as a “dreamer” is someone who entered the country illegally as a youngster and has now come to identify as an American.
Harris is in favor of laws that provide illegal immigrants—including so-called Dreamers—a route to citizenship.
To reduce immigration, Trump, however, is in favor of ending the Dreamers program.
