America’s #1 Condom is being criticized for this claim
“Crown” has been heralded as “America’s #1 Condom” but is now challenged by allegations that they contain dangerous “forever chemicals” and are unfit for the intended purpose. The claims have been advanced by plaintiff Matthew Goodman in a proposed class action law suit filed on Monday in Manhattan against the manufacturing firm of Church & Dwight. Goodman stated that an independent laboratory tested Trojan Ultra-Thin condoms and found organic fluorine, which may be an indicator of forever chemicals.
PFAS or per and poly fluorinated alkyl substances are a group of chemicals that are present in numerous products that we use on a daily basis, such as toilet paper, food packing, cosmetics, dental approaches and so forth. Forever chemicals is one of the monikers given to these substances since they take a long period to biodegrade and remain Environmental.
This widespread occurrence of such chemicals is particularly worrying since many research investigations reveal harmful health outcomes due to exposure to such chemicals like high cholesterol and blood pressure, low immunity, reproductive problems and increased chances of many kinds of cancer among others, the US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry detailed.
Nevertheless, the extent of the risk related to the dermal absorption of these substances is not clearly known. Still, it is these fears which out the foundation of Goodman’s case.
As per the claim, it is alleged that Goodman purchased a tubular packet of these condoms before being informed about the possible PFAS in its conscious use.
“His policy was,” the complaint said, “Based on the label, he [Goodman] reasonably believed that it was appropriate to use the product on his genitalia.” “Had he known that the products contained PFAS chemicals and the inhibitory potential of PFAS chemicals on health, he would not have purchased the products at all or at least be willing to pay lower.”
On February 6 earlier this year, advocacy blog Mamavation conducted a study into the presence of PFAS in common condom and lubricant brands across the U.S. The team purchased 29 unique commercial condom and lubricant variants today and sent them to an EPA approved facility to seek “indications” of PFAS. In particular, they were looking for the presence of organic fluorine, which is a constituent of all molecules of PFAS. However, fluorine also exists in many other such molecules which do not contain PFAS.
Andrea Love ‘. An immunologist, microbiologist, and science communicator says, Media themselves, It is wrong to think that rectangles are a form of shape for a square since all square shapes are rectangles. Let me put it this way. There are other organic fluorine-containing materials that are chemical structures possible to be labeled as non-PFAS compounds. As a matter of fact, quite a number of drugs have organic fluorine in them including fluoxetine (prozac), atorvastatin (lipitor), fluticason (flonase). Organic fluoride exists in many commonly used anesthetic agents and so forth.”
Love, however, argued that it was incorrect to treat any PSTS in marketing as more damaging than the others: “As I have mentioned earlier, PFAS encompasses a wide category of chemicals with thousands of chemical variants. Such chemicals will always have some kind of health risk at varying concentration especially Wicking PFAS at certain concentrations. But claiming all of them to be ‘bad’ is equivalent to claiming all other edible mushrooms are bad since one is poisonous. Many but not all PFAS harmful to human health do contain organic fluorinated polymer for. Teflon PTFE.
“’[Mamavation] also include in their summary:….f…g…g…’ Scott Belcher, PhD and Associate Professor within the Center for Environmental and Health Effects of PFAS North Carolina State University says ‘fluoropolymers such as polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE are very much abused forms of PFAS which might be the source of organic fluorine present in condoms and lubricants’” In their study, 14% of the products tested were more than 10 ppm of organic fluorine and one 13 ppm Trojan Ultra-Thin condom stands out.
Trojan’s many products have been tested, including Ecstasy Ultra Ribbed and Magnum Large, and Trojan… Many organic fluorine was not detected. Mamavation have demanded the removal of PFAS from general applicator internal WHOOM and SHA –an Applicator MU but should we be alarmed by their findings? “The answer is NO, this is not something that should cause worry,” Love explained. “They did not actually look for any and all types of PFAS specifically, and even if they did find PFAS, you really need to be more precise on the nature of exposure.”
