Donald Trump had trouble answering multiple questions about campaign promises at Univision town hall
US ELECTION 2024: During a Univision town hall on Wednesday, former president Donald Trump chose not to openly respond to a number of questions on his prior deeds or his 2024 campaign promises.
The Republican presidential candidate answered questions from a group of Latino voters who were still unsure of their decision at the event in Miami. Topics covered included immigration, abortion, and the January 6 assault.
On several of the concerns brought up by audience members, Trump did not address details, and he sidestepped certain problems completely.
Trump had the opportunity to court Latino and Hispanic voters at the Univision event, a potentially significant voting demographic in battleground states like Nevada and Arizona.
According to a recent survey conducted by the New York Times and Siena College, 56% of Hispanic voters indicated they would choose Vice President Kamala Harris, while 37% said they would support Donald Trump. A CNN exit poll from 2020 indicated that 65 percent of Latino voters supported Joe Biden, while just 32 percent supported Donald Trump.
A Republican voter who was not registered to vote spoke to Trump at the town hall, saying, “Your action, and maybe inaction, during your presidency and the last few years was a little disturbing to me.”
The voter highlighted Trump’s reactions to the coronavirus outbreak and the Capitol assault on January 6 as examples.
“So why would I want to support you?” he said, pointing out how many former Trump government staffers, including former Vice President Mike Pence, no longer back the Republican’s presidential quest.
In response, Trump said that only “a very small portion” of his supporters from his former government had switched to him. In addition, he played down the Capitol violence, saying it was a “day of love.”
“Hundreds of thousands of people visited Washington under your leadership. I didn’t cause them to arrive. The election was the reason they came. They came because they believed the election was rigged, according to Trump. “A few of them individuals visited the Capitol. “Peacefully and patriotically,” I replied. Nothing improper was done at all.”
Trump went on to say that he will have the backing of many votes in November, including members of the Latino community. He responded, “Maybe we’ll get your vote.” “Sounds like maybe I won’t, but that’s OK, too.”
“If you deport these people, who would do that job, and what price would we pay for food?” questioning Trump was posed by a voter who claimed to have worked for many years picking strawberries and chopping broccoli, jobs that he said were mostly performed by illegal workers.
In response, Trump said, “Farmers are doing very badly right now—very, very badly under this administration,” without explicitly answering the issue. During my leadership, farmers saw great success.”
Following that, the former president attacked the Biden administration, claiming it had let “hundreds of thousands of people that are murderers, drug dealers, and terrorists” into the nation.
“We welcome the arrival of labor, but they must do so lawfully. They must cherish our nation. They must adore you and our people. The issue facing this government is that they have completely lost control, Trump said, adding that “murderers” should not be allowed inside.
Another voter questioned why, earlier in the year, Trump had instructed Republican senators to defeat a bipartisan border security package that aimed to limit border crossings and tighten down on illegal immigration.
“You like strong borders, so do I, and we have them,” Trump said. “We had the strongest border we’ve ever had in the recorded history of our country.” Trump then continued his criticism on Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson while talking about Chicago’s crime statistics.
Melania Trump, the former first lady, has said in her soon-to-be released biography how important it is to defend the right to an abortion. When questioned whether he agreed with her, Trump replied that she had “to go with her heart.””
“I wouldn’t want to impose what I think,” he said.
During the event, one of the audience members asked Trump to list three qualities he thought Harris had.
Trump gave the vice president some credit even though he said that the question was the “toughest” of the evening.
“I don’t like it. “I believe she has caused immense damage to our nation—not just at the border but also with inflation and numerous other issues,” said Trump.
“But she seems to have a capacity for survival,” he went on. “You know, she was eliminated from the race, and now she’s vying for president.” Other people are really good at it, while other individuals are not.
She seems to have a few rather enduring friendships. She appears to have a pleasant demeanor, which is something I consider positive.”
On October 10, at her Univision town hall in Las Vegas, Harris was asked a similar question on the qualities of Trump.
“It’s crucial, in my opinion, that Donald Trump cherishes his family. One of the most essential things we can emphasize, in my opinion, is family,” Harris said.
To be honest with you, however, I don’t really know him,” she said. He and I only crossed paths once, during the debating stage. I don’t really have much else to give you since I haven’t met him before.”
