How the agents who protect US presidents are selected and how they work
Newsweek’s staff conducted an interview with Cheryl Tyler, who used to be a member of the Secret Service and a training officer.
During her tenure, Tyler became the first African American female Secret Service executive who was assigned to the field to protect Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush. The autobiographic book Trailblazer she authored.
Tyler admitted in the admin interview conducted for Newsweek about the ambivalence and incongruity that pervade the whole process of selection of secret service members who specialize in protecting presidents.
As she explained, “Always, there is a full procedure in bidding on getting to other positions that you want during your time in the Secret Service. Let us say that you start your career at a field office, and after some years you finish your protection time.” She added that when positions are posted, people rush in to apply in hopes of getting the next position, which is more favorable.
“She further added, “It could be any way around; some individuals could want to attend vice president detail or president’s detail. A few want to come back to a previous detail. It simply depends,’’ as opposed to, and how does this work in the context of this procedure? “This is a fact”—the p procedure is there. It is not like someone is simply gloomily saying, ‘How about this person goes here?’.”
“We are nonpolitical,” she stated. “Our length of stay in an assignment is only dictated by the assignment regardless of who is in the office.”
Tyler elaborated that once a task is taken, it becomes a task to complete, and you never come out of it. “If one is assigned a protected task, one praises the protected assignment for the duration they specify.”
“You cannot sit and decide on who you want to associate with or sit and decide that you have been victimized, and therefore you will not participate in any of that.”
There is an official application procedure for doctors. Tyler told Newsweek, “That’s how the government functions as a whole.” There is a formal procedure for the application of doctors in a set timeframe, more or less. Wilson informed this publication that his situation was rather typical: Who can complain about how the government performs? Tyler shared how the obstacles of the Secret Service also change depending on the circumstance and the audience at hand.
Tyler made the following statement on Trump: “The previous and current CEO and presidential aspirant is a very occupied person. What a moving person he is. He goes, he travels, and he does this. If to compare him with some other former presidents, he does more.”. To paraphrase, Tyler said that Trump has indeed chosen to allow the secret service to guard him. “There is a provision in the constitution that after leaving office, the president can decide to step down from the Secret Service. It is up to them whether or not they make that decision.” Many of them have been working like this for many years.
Because the social nature of society as it is now is putting a demand on Secret Service personnel recruitment. So yes, there is a need for more humans. They’ve got technology. They need people, Tyler other reiterated, and although they do have such a great many tools and equipment that help them do their work efficiently, they can always do with more people.
“It’s a sort of agency that a lot of people find very mystique,” said Tyler. “People in general tend to want to learn as much as they can about this specific agency, but certain things they will never learn, and they do not need to.” “Every day, my ex-colleagues get out and leave their homes and their families to always protect the head of the free world. It is the commitment they took according to the constitution.
